Wellness Wednesday!: What is Iridology and is it Useful?

I get asked frequently if iridology really "works," and why I practice it. As someone who has incorporated iridology into my practice for years now, I can personally tell you that, from my experience, iridology is a POWERFUL tool to use when it comes to learning about your health and the state of your physical body. I can't tell you how many times I have met with a client, they tell me all their symptoms, I read their eyes and find, say, a "degenerative" spot on the right ankle bone (the place in the eye that matches up with the right ankle bone), mention this to them and ask if they've ever injured their right ankle, and they reply (in shock) "yes, actually, I broke my ankle when I was a teenager!" I'm completely serious. It's pretty wild.

So what exactly is iridology, is it biblical, and finally, is it really even worth getting your eyes read? Keep reading for my answers to all of these excellent questions.

Iridology is an alternative medicine-based practice of using the eye to learn things about the body. As most natural therapies and alternative "diagnostic"* practices such as reflexology, acupressure, TCM techniques like facial analysis, etc., iridology is not backed by evidence-based research or scientifically proven to be an effective diagnostic* tool...however, we can't deny testimonials and plain proof we've seen with our own eyes (no pun intended...)!

Iridologists believe that the eye is almost like a road map to the inner body. Each part of the eye aligns with a specific organ, gland, or part of the body. When an abnormality is seen in a specific part of the eye, in iridology, this means there is a weakness in that specific part of the body. Trust me, I know it sounds crazy...I was totally skeptical when I first learned about it 5 years ago! But since getting my own eyes read, becoming an iridologist myself, and reading countless eyes and finding things that my clients forgot to mention...I'm a total believer. Iridology is a truly amazing tool to use!

Another question I get asked quite often is how I can in good conscience practice iridology as a Christian. Or, for that matter, practice ANY "alternative" therapies as a Christian (like yoga, aromatherapy, reflexology, etc.). To be honest, I have to chuckle at this. While natural medicine is oftentimes seen as very "New Age-y" and "anti-Christian," the opposite is actually true. When we think about it, all natural therapies utilize NATURAL resources--aka things that God Himself gave us to use for healing (think herbs, essential oils, food, using our bodies to learn about our health). Things that have become standard "healing" techniques like surgery, medications, and invasive diagnostic procedures are NOT things that God gave us. Now please, don't get me wrong--these things are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL and I am so beyond thankful for traditional medicine, doctors, and MRI machines (however much they hurt my head...), but I think it's negligent to take a one-sided approach to healing: either all allopathic or all alternative. They complement each other beautifully, and we can see God's workings through both modalities. Now back to the question of whether or not iridology is biblical. I don't know about you, but I don't believe in coincidences. God doesn't make mistakes, and He doesn't do things "just because." I believe every single person looks, smells, acts, thinks, and feels the way they do for a higher purpose--even if we won't know that higher purpose until we are in Heaven (Romans 8:28 again, y'all! I'm telling you it's my LIFE verse!). With this said, I believe with my WHOLE HEART that humans look the way they do for a reason--and not just because looking this way is appealing. There's a reason we are designed in this way. And there's a reason God designed our bodies to be CONSTANTLY CHANGING AND ADAPTING to our circumstances and environment--our bodies have literally been designed to alert us when something is wrong (pain, inflammation, hair falling out, fatigue, etc.--all of these things are signs that our body gives us that something bigger is wrong). The eyes are no different--they change based on the state of out inner bodies! You can find countless stories of people who's eyes have literally CHANGED COLOR after going through a long detoxification program (like THIS VIDEO), and others still who document their physical healing and notice how, as specific ailments heal, the corresponding abnormality in the eye fades too. Amazing! One of my favorite verses I hold on to when addressing the topic of Christianity and iridology is Matthew 6:22: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light." What better testament to iridology, right? I mean, come on!

It can be difficult to find a good iridologist. Like many natural healing practices and modalities, there's really no regulations when it comes to titles...so basically someone who takes a 3-week class in iridology could technically get away with calling themselves an "iridologist." It's unfortunate but it's true. However, iridology is NOT a complicated science. I try to encourage my clients to play around with reading their own eyes before I read them myself, to help enable them to see just how simple it is! Of course, there are master iridologists and varying levels of depth they can see in the eye (my mom once got her eyes read in Kansas City, and the details he knew about her without EVER having met her before were, as she puts it, "creepy"!). Additionally, there are various branches of iridology. I personally follow the methodology of Dr. Bernard Jensen, who is credited with bringing iridology to the United States in the 1950s. His method expanded on that of Emanuel Felke, a German homeopathic physician who originally "discovered" iridology in the 1900s and found it to be an incredibly effective tool to incorporate into his homeopathic practice in terms of diagnosing* and finding the proper remedy for his patients. German iridology is the original iridology, and the most sound. It has stood the test of time, and proven to be accurate time and again. It's an irreplaceable modality in the Anna's Organics Wellness practice!

Iridology is truly a fascinating science--and one that was given to us by The Lord Himself. I so greatly love learning all the ways to explore our inner body using our outer body: reflexology, facial analysis, reflexology, dental analysis, even our body shape and cravings. The body is an absolutely amazing thing and so very, very wise. It will tell us or show us when something isn't right. God made us so that we could learn where our own areas of weakness are and strengthen them--all by ourselves--using HIS methods: the body he so awesomely He designed for us and equipped with ready-made diagnostic tools, and whole, nutrient-dense REAL foods and herbs! What an awesome thought...and an awesome Creator.

Hope this post has been helpful and informative! Let me know if there are any specific topics you would like me to cover in future Wellness Wednesday posts. Until next time, love to all and Happy Wellness Wednesday!

*NOTE: Iridology, TCM facial diagnosis, and other alternative methods of care DO NOT claim to diagnose disease, but rather "identify weaknesses" in the body.
